I remember an interesting statistic from when I lived in Virginia, 56% of the Civil War was fought on Virginia soil. But, the Old Dominion’s history encompasses more than that. From the Jamestown settlement, the surrender of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown, to the men who led from the beginning, Washington, Jefferson, and Madison.
Imagine Virginia Governor Thomas Jefferson running out the back door of his Monticello home, as the traitor Benedict Arnold, charged up the drive to arrest him. Or at Appomattox Court House with the victorious General Grant, USA, gracefully offering terms of surrender to General Lee, CSA, across the table from him.
So, when I saw this quote from President Abraham Lincoln, “Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”, I knew in my mind how I was going to approach the creation of this card. . . a memorial battlefield (similar to Gettysburg) that would depict an old canon guarding the the fallen.
What do you think?
